Happy Friday Friends,
Today has been a rough one. I woke up this morning to my sweet eight year old daughter devastated because her pet fish died.
She has the sweetest, kindest soul and my heart is broken for her.
I wrote this poem for her and how it feels raising and being an empath.
Glass Hearts
I thought our hearts were made of glass once, the way they break too easily.
The death of a fish nearly ripped you apart and I cried with you because I loved her too.
But maybe they aren’t made of glass, because the thing about love is, I would do it all again.
We’ll buy another fish and cry when it dies too and one day your heart will break over something new and there won’t be anything I can do to fix that either.
So I’ll take the blame if you need me to. Maybe I wasn’t ready to take care of something so fragile as a fish.
But I think maybe our hearts aren’t made of glass, you and I, but of rubber.
They don’t shatter like tea cups against a marble floor but they do stretch.
And maybe they’ll never be the same after something cuts them the way I was never the same after you, but they aren’t broken.
Not for long.
Glass hearts can’t be mended, but rubber ones will always be ready
to
love
again.
With love and a strange new grief,
